A little bit of context

At Hospital Universitario de Saltillo, I joined the biomedical engineering department as part of my undergraduate internship. The department was responsible for maintaining and repairing essential medical equipment to ensure hospital operations ran smoothly. With a small team of only three engineers, we handled preventive and corrective maintenance, staff training, and equipment transfers. My role allowed me to gain hands-on experience while also identifying inefficiencies in workflow and proposing solutions to improve maintenance processes.

Outcome

  • Reduced maintenance time

by 1/3 through improved organization around the office. Eliminated non-functional parts, improved accessibility, and optimized the department’s resources.

  • Streamlined work processes

contributing to better efficiency and time management.

  • Trained hospital staff

    to properly use essential equipment.

  • Ensured medical equipment remained in optimal condition

with on-time maintenance. Conducted maintenance on critical hospital equipment, including vital signs monitors, infusion pumps, ventilators, and X-ray machines.

Activities

As an intern, I was responsible for performing preventive and corrective maintenance on medical equipment, training hospital staff, and assisting in equipment transfers. Additionally, I helped improve workflow efficiency and supervised two other interns.

Preventative Maintenance

Conducted scheduled inspections and servicing of medical devices in different hospital areas each month to prevent failures.

Corrective Maintenance

Diagnosed and repaired malfunctioning medical equipment based on reports from hospital staff to ensure continuous operation.

Staff Training

Provided training to doctors and nurses on the proper use of new or complex medical equipment, including pediatric ventilators.

Equipment Transfer

Managed the relocation and tracking of medical devices between hospital areas to maintain proper inventory and availability.

Skills

  • Hands-on experience with medical equipment maintenance.

  • Identifying and resolving inefficiencies in workflow.

  • Supervising interns and collaborating with hospital staff.

  • Structuring maintenance schedules and optimizing workspace.
